Connections for an indoor vertical garden – open water circuit

Elements for creating an installation of an indoor green wall with an open water circuit

  1. Water supply
  2. Control panel (location)
  3. Drainage connection (syphon)
  4. Lighting for plants

1. Water supply

To supply water to a vertical garden, water supply is typically made about 30 centimeters down from the top edge of the garden. It is terminated with a 1/2″ connector with internal thread. The best way is to bring water as close to the center of the green wall as possible. Water is supplied sub-surface.

2. Control panel location

The location for setting up the control system for the vertical garden is essentially neutral. This means it can be done near the green wall or in another location. However, it is essential that water is supplied to the place where the control system and solenoid valve are located. The connection is terminated with a 1/2″ external thread valve. Water is then directed directly to the vertical garden from this point. Water supply should be independent.

3. Drainage connection

The execution of the drainage connection depends on the size and height at which the vertical garden begins. Below are links to three websites explaining the installation of connections for each type of green wall.

4. Lighting for plants

A vertical garden requires light. To illuminate it, artificial light that closely resembles natural light is needed.

The minimum amount of light directed at one square meter of the plant wall is 800 lux. This lighting should have a spectrum to assist plants in the process of photosynthesis. Lamps with a color temperature of 4000K, a color rendering index (CRI) of at least 90, and a luminous flux of 4000 lumens are suitable for illuminating plants on the living wall. For more information on illumination, refer to the section on vertical garden lighting.
